Though not a very popular city of the state, Salem is one of the fastest grwing cities of the country. There has been a tremendous development in the city in terms of infrastructure. First and foremost, the roads of the city are uncomparable to any other city of Tamilnadu.
Salem ByPass Road: You never seen any other city's bypass road being this much busy. The bypass road starts at Kuranguchavadi just before Five Roads junction and extends till Udayapatti enroute via State Bank Colony, Thiruvagoundanoor, Kandampatti, Kondalampatti, Seelanaickenpatti, Sanyasi Gundu, Erumapalayam, Kumaragiri. The presence of this bypass road plays an important role in reducing the traffic snarls within the city. All buses from Coimbatore, Erode, Namakkal are diverted to take the bypass to reach the central bus terminus. Its a 6-lane road from Kurangu Chavadi to Kondalampatti (where NH47 starts towards Cochin). 6-lane between Kondalampatti to Seelanaickenpatti (where NH68 starts towards Ulundurpet). 2-lane from Seelnaickenpatti to Udayapatti. This bypass is flooded with vehicle round the clock. The bypass till Seelnacickenpatti is a part of NH7, the longest NH of India.
Central Bus Terminus: This is one of the busiest and largest Bus Terminus of the country. With two bays, eastern one handles buses bound for North and East, where the western one handling buses bound for West and south. The Bus Station can handle a huge number of buses with a vast area. AVR Swarna Mahal is taking care of beatifying the station further. Previously the Mofussil buses were parked at the Fort Bus station. But the increasing traffic has made it absolutely impossible for them being handled at Fort. So the station was moved to Meyyanur, on Omalur Road. Themovement of the Bus station had helped the city growing further as it can be infered by looking at the huge shopping complexes around the bus station. Still the city buses are handled at the Old Bus Stand at Fort.
Five Roads: This one the most commercialised place of the city with huge number of shopping complexes and hotels. The places is named so as there are five roads meeting at place. Places to where roads meet here are Junction, the city centre (Fort), Meyyanur, Fairlands, and Omalur.
Fort: The old city with densely populated urban area. Traffic congestion is the prime problem in this area. City bus terminus is located here. About 25 and odd cinema theatres located nearby to each other atFort. Fort Mariamman temple, Sugavaneswarar temple, Fort Perumal temple are famous temples of the region.
Shevapet: The commercial capital of Salem city, again densely populated and not witnessed any bus services till date and no scope in future too. Heavy traffic jams in the earlymorning owing to the huge flow of goods trucks into the Market. This is the wealthiest place of the city, but by outlook it looks not so.
Agraharam: The first and second Agraharam along with the Bazaar street are the favourite place to shop dresses and jewels. First agraharam hosts all types of textilematerials whereas second agraharam mainly deals with traditional Kanchipuram silks. The Bazaar street mainly deals with jewels. The place is always busy with huge number of people flowing into. It becomes absolutely a great thing to walk into the place during Deepavali purchase times.
Fairlands: Alagapuram is traslated as Fairlands. This place is the fastest growing one of Salem. With huge number of shopping maals coming up. This is another wealthiest part of the city with peace surroundings. This is the costliest area of the city. Thee Sharada College Road hosts many shopping complexes and there are number of educational institutions in this area.
Ammapet: A densely populated area in the east of the city.
Four Roads: This is yet another shopping area of the city. Anna Park nearby is the place where children use to spend their evening with their parents. There are number of shopping complexes here too.
